Finally! We have all waited these many long months (for some features, even years) for iOS 5 to go public, and now the time has come. If you’re the proud owner of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can now upgrade to iOS 5 and enjoy over 200 new features for your iOS device. There are step-by-step posts aplenty across the width and breadth of the internet, but to keep it uber-simple, just remember to first back up your device in iTunes first, then check for updates in iTunes and iOS 5 should be available for downloading and updating. Also, be sure you have the most recent iTunes update.

What does iOS 5 bring to the table? It’s an epic update — iCloud integration, iMessage, Notification Center, Reminders, Twitter integration, AirPlay Mirroring, and much, much more. Plug in your iOS device, dig in and enjoy!

In virtually no time at all following the release of AppleTV, jailbreakers @p0sixninja and @MuscleNerd have jailbroken it with SHAtter and have posted up some proof on Twitter. You can catch the full video here of the jailbroken AppleTV (2010) in action. This is great news for those of us patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for the SHAtter jailbreak to come to the iPhone, iPod touch and, of course, the iPad.

After all, Jailbreaking really is a matter of taking the red pill and seeing how far the rabbit hole goes — jailbreaking opens the closed system of your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and allows the installation of outside apps onto your device — apps that are not available and not permitted in Apple’s App Store and provide for a far greater customizable experience with your device. So, seeing a new jailbroken iOS-powered AppleTV is an encouraging sight and we hope that the SHAtter jailbreak will be available for all of our other “i” devices very soon!

Thanks, @p0sixninja and @MuscleNerd!

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em… or at least make some apps that will run on their device so you can put some more coin in your pocket. According to one of Microsoft pundit Paul Thurrott’s Twitter updates, Microsoft is developing apps for the iPad. There is no other clue as to what those apps might be, but you can likely count on a Bing app (they love to push that service) and, hopefully, an MS Office suite.

At least Microsoft recognizes the power and popularity of Apple’s iPad — it’s kinda fun to think about what the app approval process may be like when Microsoft submits their apps to Apple for approval. Bow to your Sensei!

At long last, the official Twitter app is now available for the iPad. Although available for the iPhone for some time now, Twitter has just updated their app to version 3.1 and includes compatibility and features that take advantage of the iPad platform. Twitter for the iPad offers up the following additional features:

  • Brings your Tweets together with web pages, photos, videos and more.
  • Tap on any Tweet and a related content pane will open, displaying any linked content from the Tweet, including web pages, profile information, hashtag searches and similar users.
  • Slide panels from side to side and quickly navigate through related content.
  • Quickly peek into a Tweet by pinching on a Tweet to unfold related information and actions, and use two fingers to drag on a Tweet to reveal replies.

It’s very nice to see Twitter offer up some features that utilize the bigger screen and capabilities of the iPad. It’s a FREE download, so get the app and try it out for yourself. Post a Comment if you have something to say about Twitter’s new iPad version.

Ever since Twitter acquired Tweetie, a popular iPhone Twitter app, it was just a matter of time until Twitter unveiled the Tweetie app as a repackaged, revamped app for the iPhone. The Twitter app is also compatible with iPad, but you know the drill by now — tap on the “2x” button on the bottom right of your screen and be prepared to say bye-bye to your crisp, sharp resolution.

The picture above is a screenshot of my iPad running Twitter, and as you can see, 2x isn’t unusuable, but it is lacking in crisp resolution. On the iPad in 2x mode, the font is pixelated and a little blurry, so hopefully Twitter will release a bona fide iPad version soon.

The new Twitter app offers a dedicated ReTweet button, among other things. The app is FREE for download and use, but even though it’s free and offers some new features, it lacks push notification, and that can be a dealbreaker for a lot of folks. If you download it and give it a try, let us know what you think!
