This morning I awoke to my brain telling me, “You have a headache from working all night.”. But, I pushed ahead since I need to finish configuring my home computer. Not sure why exactly, but, last night I decided to load a fresh install of Windows 7 on my computer, with all the respective applications, data, settings, external devices, etc.

The install of Windows 7 itself only took 17 minutes. But, the Windows 7 updates, along with loading the two profiles [The Mrs' and mine], well, 12 hours later, and am still at it.

During this process, I had to install iTunes, and thus configure it for my iPhone & iPad. Oh, and I had to do the same for The Mrs. Of course, in true Apple marketing style, once you log into it, you’re presented with the App Store, enticing you to buy this song, that video, and even install this app.

Me being the gadget person I am, I perused the store for a moment to see what was on offer.

Recently my good ‘ol reliable Apple MacBook Pro alerted me that I was running very slim on hard disk space. Yikes! Less than 1GB to go — that simply won’t do. Trying to get creative with freeing up more disk space, I did a little bit of online research and learned that one of the easiest and quickest ways I could free up several gigabytes of space was to look no further than iTunes.

If you open up iTunes, click on “Preferences” in the iTunes menu bar, then select your “Devices” tab, you’ll likely see several backups for your “i” devices, whether you’ve been syncing an iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or all the above. Chances are, you have more than one backup, eating up precious gigabytes of space on your hard drive. Unless you really need those older backups, you may want to consider keeping just the most recent backups and deleting the rest. With just a few clicks, I was able to free up enough hard disk space that I went from a skimpy 792MB to just over 17GB!  Now, I have quite a bit of breathing room and I don’t have to rush off and spend $$ upgrade my hard drive.

If you’re more tech-savvy, you can also delve into your file system and find your backups and delete them there, but iTunes is a simple, straight-forward and safer way to do it. If you decide to delete some of your backups, how much space did you free up?

It’s been a hard day’s night and I’ve been working like a dog. Well, sleeping, actually. But I got up in time to make sure our readers are aware of a significant Apple iTunes event — for the first time ever, you can download any one of the 13 Beatles studio albums or grab the entire box set on iTunes. So whether you want to download to listen on your computer, your iPad, iPhone, iPod, iPod touch, or any other iDevice you have, take a step or two back in time when the mop-top was fresh and psychedelia was bold and new and start downloading The Beatles classic music. No matter your musical tastes, no one did it like John, Paul, Ringo and George.

It was only a few short years ago when the first-generation iPhone was released (2007) and Steve Jobs seemed reluctant to entertain the prospect of 3rd-party apps. Three years, millions of iPhones, millions of iPads and iPod touches, and now billions of app downloads later, the App Store is looking like a really swell idea.

According to the graph provided by Asymco, the App Store will catch up to the iTunes Music Store in 20 months or less, and we’re betting on less than 20 months because the number of apps will continue to grow. Personally, I’m not surprised by these figures when I consider my own personal habit of checking the App Store on a daily basis for new and interesting apps.

What about you? Are you app-crazy or does app-mania drive you crazy?

Apple is holding an event today where they are expected to announce a new higher-resolution iPod touch, possibly a new Apple TV (rumors have circulated that an iOS-based Apple TV was in the works), and new 99-cent TV show rentals in iTunes for Fox and ABC. It’s likely that those of us who have been waiting for iOS 4 to come to the iPad will have to wait a while longer.

Could there also be some news of a 7-inch iPad or is the smaller iPad just speculation? We will all know soon enough – today, actually.

…wait a minute, didn’t I already buy that app? Oh, it was for my iPhone.

Typically, I don’t make a fuss about paying for applications, software, devices, and gadgets in general. I don’t because of various things. Mainly, I like to play with and test applications. To me, you really can’t speak about an app, and it’s good\bad features, until you’ve at least tried it once.

So, with that said, I hate to say, I get a little annoyed when I have to pay for an app that I already have I mean, own for the iPhone. Yes, I know the developer went out of their way to create the specs specifically for the iPad, but…

Tell us what you think – how do you feel about buying an app twice?

It’s been just over two months since the iPad debuted and iPad apps have increased in number at a very healthy pace. There are now over 10,000 universal and iPad apps in Apple’s iTunes App Store, with almost 1,000 new apps being added to the store each week. Apps are very much the lifeblood of a device like the iPad, so the more apps, the better.

By comparison, it took almost eleven months for Google’s Android Market to reach 10,000 apps in spite of having no approval process. Even though Apple has a fairly stringent approval process to better police quality control and performance, Apple apps development is kicking major butt over the competition. Given the number of iPads sold and the ever-growing number of iPad apps, it would appear that Apple’s tablet wonder is here to stay and poised to dominate.

If you’re wanting to get your Facebook groove going on your iPad, you should check out sobees for Facebook, currently available for free in the iTunes App Store. The sobees app presents Facebook in a newspaper-like format, and according to their site, the app includes the following features:

  • View friends’ status updates, wall posts, pictures, videos and links
  • See all of your friends’ pictures on one page and browse by profile picture, like a real face book
  • Access and view friends’ profiles and walls
  • View your friends’ recent photo albums
  • Manage events and birthdays simply in a month calendar view
  • Update your own status, and post comments and/or like your friends’ comments

After using the native Facebook app on iPad’s Safari and using Facebook’s iPhone app on the iPad, the sobees Facebook app puts a fresh face on Facebook and, in my opinion, makes it a delight to use on the iPad. I like the “newspaper” look on the front page with sections for Latest Status Updates, Breaking News, Latest Links of your friends, Latest Hot Images, and even Latest Video for your viewing pleasure. Tabs along the top will take you to People (your friends), Photos, Events (in a nice calendar interface), and your Profile.

For the time being, this app is free so give it a try on your iPad and let us know what you think!

From those of us at naked iPad to our mothers and all of the mothers out there — Happy Mother’s Day! While flowers, chocolates, and cards are the traditional fare for remembering our mothers on Mother’s Day, many of our mothers may be far away where the traditional gifts are less practical. Would you like to catch up on some of your favorite ABC shows, like Lost, Desperate Housewives, or Modern Family? You can on your iPad with the ABC Player app, available for FREE in the App Store right here. The ABC Player app lets you catch up with your favorite ABC shows anytime, anywhere from your iPad. Of course, if you are running with the Wi-Fi only iPad you will need to have a hotspot handy, and until the latest ABC Player update (version 1.1.1004) that just hit the store recently, you would have had trouble viewing ABC’s shows on your iPad 3G. But now, ABC Player has been updated with the following improvements:

  • 3G streaming (!) – requires the iPad 3G, of course.
  • Landscape orientation support for all screens.
  • Support for the iPad’s orientation lock.
  • Updated player controls that are more responsive.
  • Improved display of parental ratings.
  • Numerous other bug fixes and stability enhancements.

People complained about the player being useless on the iPad 3G, and ABC listened. I’m watching the latest episode of Modern Family right now — the very episode that aired just last night — on my iPad 3G, using 3G, and it’s excellent. The video is smooth, the audio great, and the show — funny stuff.

If you haven’t downloaded the update yet, check your App Store update section on your iPad or in iTunes. If you haven’t downloaded ABC Player yet, I highly recommend that you do!

Check out an ABC Player screenshot after the break!
