Apple is holding an event today where they are expected to announce a new higher-resolution iPod touch, possibly a new Apple TV (rumors have circulated that an iOS-based Apple TV was in the works), and new 99-cent TV show rentals in iTunes for Fox and ABC. It’s likely that those of us who have been waiting for iOS 4 to come to the iPad will have to wait a while longer.

Could there also be some news of a 7-inch iPad or is the smaller iPad just speculation? We will all know soon enough – today, actually.

The sure signs of approaching Fall — football, the leaves start changing, there’s a crispness in the air, and… Apple holds a “special event” in San Francisco. By the way, we are loving the sweet Apple-fied acoustic guitar. It must be how Steve-o croons to the ladies when he serenades.

On a more serious note (no pun intended), it’s likely this event will concern the new Apple TV (iTV?) and maybe some new iPods. Also, this is right around the time that we can expect iOS 4 for the iPad (folders, anyone?) and maybe — pure rumor, conjecture and speculation here — a whiff of the 7″ iPad?

What do you think Apple’s “special event” will bring?

What better way to start a Monday than with some more rumor-mongering? Better yet, there’s a fact or two behind the rumors that provide a little substance, although when it comes to Verizon and the iPhone, we’ve been hearing that one since way back in 2007. However, this time around, apparently Apple has placed orders for allegedly millions of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for some December iPhone manufacturing.

December is really too late for a Christmas push of the iPhone 4, but it should be in time for some January shenanigans if Apple were preparing massive iPhone numbers for a Verizon or Sprint launch, and that’s the rumor — that either Verizon or Sprint may be launching the iPhone in January 2011. Apple is also busy with more iPad magic, allegedly releasing a 9.7-inch and 7-inch model in the first quarter of 2011.

With these delicious rumors afloat, it begs the questions: are you likely to bail on AT&T for a Verizon or Sprint iPhone, or if with Verizon already, will you ditch your HTC or BlackBerry for the monolithic iOS 4 device? Or if iPads are more your style, does a smaller iPad catch your eye?

A picture, indeed, is worth a thousand words. For those who have been waiting for a jailbreaking solution to jailbreak your iPad 3.2.1 and iPhone 4 (along with iPhone 3GS and 3G with the iOS 4 firmware upgrade), your time has come.

Thanks to comex and the rest of the geniuses at the DEV-TEAM BLOG, the new jailbreak is now available and can be downloaded directly from your Mobile Safari browser on your device. Just go to jailbreakme.com and you can begin jailbreaking. Keep in mind, however, that since this jailbreak has just been released, traffic is overloading the server and you’ll likely get error after error as you try to download and install the jailbreak. So far, this has been my experience, so I think I’ll try to be patient and hold off for a day or so in hopes that traffic will lighten up.

When attempting to jailbreak my iPad 3G with this solution, my iPad crashes and reboots. It’s my understanding that this can be avoided if you remove your 3G SIM card. Therefore, you’ll need to have Wi-Fi access if you’re going to jailbreak your iPad.

If you are still trying to decide if jailbreaking is for you, also remember that jailbreaking is completely legal and legit as we previously posted here. If you decide to take the plunge, tip your hat to comex and the folks at the DEV-TEAM BLOG for creating a simple jailbreaking solution that doesn’t even require a Mac or PC to install. You can also donate a little $$$ to comex if you appreciate the work and time he’s put into this jailbreak.

As always, BE CAREFUL! Jailbreaking does involve a little risk and there’s a small chance you could brick your device, so be warned!

Let us know if you decide to jailbreak and if it’s working for you!

For those who’ve had a little taste of the honey of iOS 4 on their iPhone AND who happen to own an iPad, this rumor is a lot less honey and a lot more bitter. According to AppleInsider, a report indicates that Apple’s new iAd interactive ads won’t be available to iPad owners until iOS 4 comes to the iPad in November. Ouch!

Previously the expected arrival time of iOS 4 for iPad was “this Fall”, but now it’s uncertain. I was looking forward to having folders and multi-tasking for my iPad before November, but if this rumor is true, it’s going to be a bit of a wait.

There is a rumor afoot that Apple may be introducing a new iMac with iOS support, which would mean that this new iMac would likely have a Multi-Touch display. If this rumor pans out to be reality, it will be interesting to see how consumers and developers react to such a product. As pointed out by BGR, a Multi-Touch display iMac supporting iOS would be very helpful for iOS developers when creating new apps.

The idea of a desktop computer running iOS is intriguing when considering how the iPad impacts the future of mobile computing. If iOS evolves to become a more powerful OS on a desktop, this should surely translate into more powerful computing for the iPad’s tablet design. I believe that the iPad represents a fundamental shift in how we compute in a mobile world, and if Apple unveils a powerful desktop computer running iOS, then this could bode well for the future and continuing development of the iPad.

For those of you who have been waiting for the iOS 4 update for your iPhone 3G or 3GS (and iPod touch), tomorrow is the big day where you can finally update. The iOS 4 update brings many new features, including multitasking and folders for your many apps. It’s highly recommended that you back up your iPhone data and, if jailbroken, restore to OS 3.1.x before you update. If you’re waiting for iOS 4 for your iPad, well — you’ll be waiting a while longer. The iOS 4 update is due to be released for the iPad in the Fall.

You wake up, feeling tired from the hard week that you’ve had, only to be reminded that you still have two full days left in the week. It’s 24th June! Or is it? As you glance at your iPhone you notice that it’s really June 19th. Ugh! It’s still five full days before the 24th, better known as iPhone 4 release day!

Back on June 15th, as per Apple, about 600,000 people pre-ordered an iPhone 4. We all know the problems AT&T and Apple encountered with their servers that day. So are you really expecting to receive an iPhone 4 via FedEx or will one truly be available for collection from AT&T, Apple, Best But, WalMart or Radio Shack on June 24th, or will some of us be simply disappointed, period?

I guess by now you’re wondering, “What on earth does this have to do with an iPad?” Well, let me speculate a little — I’m wondering if the iOS 4 will be released for the iPad on the same day the iPhone iOS 4 is released, on June 21st? It’s an intriguing question, no doubt.

Did you know the 21st of June is the l-o-n-g-e-s-t day of the year? I guess this year it will be even longer with multiple people trying to download and install iOS 4. Share your thoughts?

According to Steve Jobs at the WWDC 2010 keynote yesterday, not only do we have the new iOS 4 software update to look forward to in the fall for the iPad, but iBooks is getting updated with some new features that make the iPad even more “magical.” The update will bring the ability to make notes in iBooks as well as view PDF files. According to Steve himself:

Now you can make notes. In addition, we’ve added a control to just tap and bookmark a page — under ToC you’ll see all the notes, highlights, and bookmarks

We’ve added another big enhancement — the ability to view and read PDFs. So we’ve built that in. You can now view PDFs. We’ve put a little selector at the top — books and PDFs. You get a whole new bookshelf just for PDFs, they just look gorgeous.

This update is good news and adds more functionality to iBooks. I really like iBooks and think it’s an excellent store and reader for the iPad. It’s great to see more features added and hopefully there will be more to come. What are some features YOU would like to see added to iBooks?
