I suppose it’s better late than never, but the good folks at Apple just sent me an email about updating my iPad to iOS 4.2 and a potential issue with my MobileMe Calendar if certain steps are not followed during the update process. In the event you are a MobileMe customer and haven’t seen the email already, here it is in its entirety:

Dear MobileMe member,

iOS 4.2 is now available and provides full support for the new MobileMe Calendar on iPad, including push updates of calendar changes. To update to iOS 4.2, connect your iPad to iTunes on your computer, select it in the Devices list, and click “Check for Update.”

Important: If you were using the new MobileMe Calendar on your iPad prior to updating to iOS 4.2, you should:

  • delete the CalDAV calendar you manually configured on your iPad
  • set the calendar slider to “on” in your MobileMe account

This will prevent the appearence of a duplicate calendar. For step-by-step instructions, please see this article.

Sincerely,

The MobileMe Team

Given some of the issues I’ve had with multiple calendar entries in the past, the last thing I want to happen when I update to iOS 4.2 is MORE duplicate calendar entries! It’s worth taking a few moments and clicking on the provided link above to check out the step-by-step instructions to avoid this problem. After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

The wait is finally over. The highly-anticipated iOS 4.2 firmware update from Apple is now available for download and it brings several goodies to the iPad that we’ve been waiting for. For the first time, iPad users will now enjoy the following:

  • Folders to better organize those countless unruly apps you have on your iPad
  • Multitasking so you can do several things at once and enjoy better battery management as well
  • AirPrint – now you can print to certain compatible printers — this feature has been scaled back significantly by Apple prior to release but hopefully they will work out the kinks in order to give us more universal compatibility
  • AirPlay for streaming digital media wirelessly from iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to Apple TV and AirPlay-enabled speakers so you can watch movies and photos on your widescreen TV and play music through your home speakers
  • Find My iPhone, iPad or iPod touch for use with MobileMe to locate a missing device
  • Game Center, iTunes TV show rentals, better Mail, Notes with fonts, replying to Calendar invitations, and more!

Remember that you will first need to update to iTunes 10.1 before you can update to iOS 4.2. Also, if you are jailbroken and unlocked, you may want to wait a while longer until the jailbreaking community has an update compatible with iOS 4.2. Otherwise, this could be one of my better Mondays in a while! Enjoy the update!

Apparently several iPad users have been receiving the above message when using Apple’s iOS software updater in iTunes, but not always. The server seems to be behaving sporadically, sometimes displaying the error message indicating that the update server can’t be contacted and at other times behaving normally and indicating that the current software (iOS 4.1) is up to date.

Apple has promised an iOS 4.2 update for iPad in November and, well, we are most assuredly running out of November days for Apple to keep this promise. Maybe, just maybe, this sporadic update server activity is evidence that Apple is preparing to roll out iOS 4.2? Some rumors have recently pointed to tomorrow, Friday, being the big day. I’m not holding my breath, but I can think far worse ways to start the weekend than a sweet update to my iPad with goodies like folders, AirPrint, etc. Are you having any trouble with Apple’s software update server?

*UPDATE* — good news and bad news, folks. The good news is that prior sources were likely correct that today was going to be the day for iOS 4.2 to be released. Now for the bad news — a source close to Apple is reporting that iOS 4.2 for the iPad will be delayed until Nov. 24th due to a buggy piece of code that affects Wi-Fi connectivity. It looks like our wait will drag out a little longer. Hang in there!

[The Telegraph]

I hate to say it, but if you were holding your breath for the iOS 4.2 update today, go ahead and exhale and breathe easy for a few. Rumors had abounded that Apple was releasing the iOS 4.2 update for the iPad either last Tuesday or today, but now it’s on fairly good word (although yet again, it’s rumor) that due to an iPad Wi-Fi glitch in the iOS 4.2 update, Apple has pushed back the release until Tuesday, November 16th. Oh, the agony.

Given that Apple only promised us the iOS 4.2 update in “November”, it’s not fair to give them a smackdown and then pile on, but it’s certainly disappointing to have to wait a few more days when today coulda shoulda been “the day.” Let’s look on the bright side with a reminder of what iOS 4.2 will bring to our iPads: multitasking, home screen folders, Game Center, AirPlay, and hopefully, a properly-working AirPrint. I am most excited about folders and AirPrint, so this Tuesday (assuming it’s “The Day”) couldn’t come soon enough!

There are some interesting things afoot as we wait on the proverbial eve of the release of iOS 4.2, which promises goodies for the iPad like folders and AirPrint. Apple’s latest iOS 4.2 firmware update was rumored to be released either yesterday or on Friday, so since it didn’t happen yesterday, this Friday the 12th is the next “sure bet” — we shall certainly see.

Rumor has it that due to some bugs and glitches that would lessen the user experience, Apple was pulling AirPrint from the update at the last minute. This would be extremely distressing news to me since AirPrint is one of the features I’ve been anticipating since I bought my “magical” iPad many months ago. Yes, I’m anxious to have folders like I currently enjoy on my iPhone 4 because heaven knows I have a gajillion apps that need organizing, but the ability to print on a network printer from my iPad? Sweet mother of pearl!

Well, there’s nothing like another comletely reasonable rumor to dispel a previous rumor, so here’s the skinny: according to MacRumors, one of their forum members sent an email to His Holiness (Steve Jobs, of course) and this is allegedly how it went down (or up):

Q: As a release-day purchaser of an iPad, I was elated when you revealed iOS 4.2 would support AirPrint. Now comes reports AirPrint support has been pulled from 4.2. Between announcements/assurances of the white iPhone, and now the pulling of AirPrint, is Apple going to lose credibility and become known for announcing “vaporware”?

A: AirPrint has not been pulled. Don’t believe everything you read.

Good advice. Don’t believe everything you read (unless you read it here on NakediPad, of course). So, according to Steve Jobs, the iPad should still have AirPrint with the ability to print to iOS-compatible printers (with HP currently leading the way here). Also, the rumor still abounds that iOS 4.2 will arrive this Friday. I’m crossing my fingers! Are you?

Apple announced that the much-anticipated iOS 4.2 firmware update for the iPad would arrive in November, and a couple of shaky sources (Inside-Handy and reports Apple will push European carrier updates on Nov. 12) point to a release this week, either tomorrow (Nov. 9) or Thursday (Nov. 12). Since we’ve already got a week of November under our belts, it’s safe to say that if Apple does indeed release iOS 4.2 this month, and there’s no reason they won’t, then it could very well be this week.

The iOS 4.2 update for the iPad is highly anticipated because it unifies the iPad and iPhone into one operating system and will bring AirPrint and AirPlay to all devices. All iPad owners will have particular cause to rejoice because iOS 4.2 will finally bring multitasking, folders, and other updates to the iPad that are truly needed for an even better user experience. Whether the rumor holds any water about the Nov. 9 or Nov. 12 release or not, we don’t have to wait much longer for more “magic” to come to Apple’s “magical” iPad.

Wouldn’t it be nifty if you could tether other devices you have with your iPad 3G so you could enjoy internet connectivity with those devices as well? According to new menu options in “Settings” on the recent iPad iOS 4.2 beta 2, Apple may be offering this very soon on the iPad. What you are seeing above is a screenshot of an iPad running on 3′s network in Europe, but it clearly displays an “Internet Tethering” section with fields for APN, Username and Password — so it appears that tethering is going to be available soon for the iPad.

If and when tethering becomes available through a firmware update on the iPad, is it something you will use? If so, how?

The iPad has a little ways to go if you want to use it as a laptop replacement, and certainly the idea of the iPad taking over the duties of your laptop is a topic that could be debated at length. Taking one step closer to laptop replacement, Apple will soon offer AirPrint on iOS 4.2 and both the iPad and iPhone will be capable of sending print jobs to most printers.

Using iOS 4.2 beta, Mac OS X 10.6.5 (also beta), and an iPad, Oliver over at the-iBlog has put together a video demonstrating AirPrint and it’s a nice preview until the real deal is released (iOS 4.2, that is) for the iPad in November. So, without further ado, give it a watch and let us know what you think. Is this another big step in the direction of the iPad replacing the laptop, or at least a heavy jab at the netbook market?

It looks like Apple’s iOS 4.2 for iPad will bring a nice November surprise — a few handy software changes that will bring the iPad more in line functionally with the iPhone. Here are a few things to expect from the update:

  • Screen orientation lock switch goes software (like the iPhone)
  • Hardware switch will toggle the sound on and off (yay for a hardware mute!)
  • Screen brightness controlled by on-screen slider

These are just a few more changes to look forward to in the iOS 4.2 update. Is it November yet?

In case you missed Apple’s Fall Event today, here’s a quick recap of what Apple is bringing to the media-hungry consumer market:

  • iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod touch coming next week (including bug fixes, HD YouTube uploads, TV rentals and Game Center), and iOS 4.2 for iPad coming in November with goodies like wireless printing (yay!) and AirPlay (replaces airtunes and adds pictures and streaming video).
  • A new multi-touch iPod nano available in different colors for $149 (8GB) and $179 (16GB).
  • Revamped iPod touch that’s thinner and sports a Retina display like the iPhone 4, HD video recording, FaceTime video calling, 3-axis gyro, and iOS 4.1 with Game Center.
  • New iTunes 10 with a better UI, new icon, and Ping social networking.
  • New Apple TV that’s a lot smaller, incorporates Netflix, $4.99 HD Hollywood movies, TV shows from ABC and FOX for 99-cents, and a $99 price tag for the whole kit and kaboodle.

What do you think about Apple’s new product announcements today? What about having to wait until November for iOS 4.2 for iPad?? And with the new iOS 4.1 coming next week, will you be tempted to lose your jailbreak if your iPhone 4 is jailbroken?
