Apple’s iPad has sold by the millions — approximately 16 million units this year since its launch — and analyst Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities predicts as many as 45 million (!!!) iPads shipping next year, after speaking with one of Apple’s component suppliers for the iPad. This estimation would certainly place the iPad squarely in the realm of being the fourth-largest consumer electronics category in the United States next year with the top three spots held by TVs, smartphones, and notebook computers, respectively.

In addition to this optimistic shipping estimate for the iPad in 2011, White also offers more information about specs for the smaller 7-inch iPad:

As others have already speculated, White’s contact says the second-generation iPad will be smaller, with a screen that measures about seven inches, compared to the first iPad’s 9.7-inch screen. The new iPad will also include the high-resolution “Retina” display that the latest version of the iPhone (4) boasts, a micro or mini USB port, a camera and greater capacity of up to 128 gigabytes. The amount of storage in the current generation of iPads tops out at 64 gigabytes.

I’m in agreement with other skeptics that the 7-inch iPad will likely NOT have a retina display in order to keep costs down. However, if Apple can ship the kinds of numbers that White is predicting, then maybe sheer volume and buying power will make a retina displays possible for future iPads?

Thanks to Shanzai.com and their “ears to the ground” in Shenzhen, and the Shenzhen – Foxconn connection, the rumor mill is churning away with the latest 7-inch iPad rumor. According to Shanzai, a 7-inch iPad is already a finished product and more resembles a larger iPhone 4 rather than an iPad. In other words, it’s looking less like a small iPad and may be toted as a larger iPod touch. Interesting.

The new 7-inch (iPod touch? iPad?) tablet will also allegedly be equipped with both a camera on the back and a front-facing camera for FaceTime. Also, there are rumored to be roughly 5 different designs floating around in order to throw competitors off the scent and, of course, it will be helpful to Apple if engineers don’t leave the 7-inch tablet alone on a barstool prior to release.

Does a 7-inch iPod touch/iPad tablet interest you?

Apple is holding an event today where they are expected to announce a new higher-resolution iPod touch, possibly a new Apple TV (rumors have circulated that an iOS-based Apple TV was in the works), and new 99-cent TV show rentals in iTunes for Fox and ABC. It’s likely that those of us who have been waiting for iOS 4 to come to the iPad will have to wait a while longer.

Could there also be some news of a 7-inch iPad or is the smaller iPad just speculation? We will all know soon enough – today, actually.

The rumor of a 7-inch iPad from Apple seems to be alive and well, according to the Chinese-language newspaper Economic Daily News out of Taiwan. The paper reports that Apple plans to release an iPad with a 7-inch screen and weighing in at 500 grams, 200 grams less than the original 9.7-inch iPad.

A smaller iPad is certainly lighter but still not exactly pocketable. With over 3.27 millions iPads selling in the first three months of availability, it would be interesting to see what kind of market will embrace and iPad that’s a wee bit smaller and lighter. It seems fair to assume that a smaller iPad will also mean a lower price tag than the original, so will smaller and cheaper be more appealing to a broader consumer base and possibly grab some fence-sitters?
