If you have updated to iOS 5 on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, or if you’ve picked up a shiny new iPhone 4S, then congratulations. There is no doubt that iOS 5 brings lots of goodies to the functionality of all iOS devices. If you’re one of the jailbreaking community, maybe you held off on the iOS 5 update? Currently, with the exception of the iPhone 4S, iOS devices running iOS 5 can be jailbroken with a tethered solution, but those wanting the additional flexibility of an untethered jailbreak, the wait continues.
What is the difference between a tethered and untethered jailbreak? To put it in the simplest terms, it’s the difference of having to connect your iOS device to your computer each time your device reboots, whether it’s an intentional reboot or an accidental one (i.e., your device crashes or freezes and required a reboot). With a tethered jailbreak, you risk having a dead device while away from your computer in the event of a reboot, with the only way of restoring functionality by plugging in to your computer to jailbreak again. The highly-anticipated untethered solution requires no plugging in — you can reboot your iOS device into a jailbroken state.
Why am I holding off on iOS 5 for an untethered jailbreak? It’s definitely a personal decision, but I will settle for no less than an untethered jailbreak and iOS 5, with all of its extra features, does not give me everything I require and enjoy on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. Namely, I use a few jailbreak apps that I consider invaluable for my iOS devices — MyWi for creating a mobile “WiFi” hotspot, My3G to dupe my device into thinking it’s on a WiFi network for purposes of downloading apps and using FaceTime on a 3G network, and LockInfo for giving me a quick look at all the necessary information from my unlock screen. To keep informed about the status of the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak, check back here or check out the Dev-Team Blog.

For those of you who jailbreak or want to take the plunge for the first time, the Dev-Team has released the untethered redsn0w jailbreak for Apple’s current 4.3.1 firmware. Just head over to the Dev-Team site for either the Windows or OS X download and make sure you browse the site for important how-to links.

Jailbreaking is not for everyone and there is always the risk of bricking your device. So, unless you want a really expensive and cool paperweight for your desk that looks identical to your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad (because it is), be sure you read and follow the jailbreaking instructions and then have at it. Also, if you’re a proud new iPad 2 owner, this jailbreak is NOT for you. I’m sure an appropriate jailbreak update is in the works for the iPad 2, but until it’s ready, steer clear of this jailbreak version until it’s ready.

With all of that said, who’s going to jailbreak 4.3.1?

I’ve been waiting for this day for a few months now. The Chronic Dev Team recently posted their untethered Greenpois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, which should work nicely on iPhone 4, iPhone 3G, 3GS, iPod touch, and yes, the iPad also. The Greenpois0n download is available for Mac, Windows and Linux and is available right here.

If you haven’t jailbroken your iOS device yet or don’t even know what jailbreaking means, you can learn a great deal by Googling jailbreaking. To put it very simply, jailbreaking your iOS device is like a skeleton key that unlocks the potential of your iOS device and frees it from the limitations that Apple has placed on it. There is a very active jailbreak developer community that has created numerous apps that make the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch a more versatile and powerful device, as well as making your device far more customizable.

Jailbreaking is easy and if you decide to take the plunge, then follow the link and jailbreak your iOS device. Remember though — even though it’s simple, jailbreaking is not completely without risk and we take no responsibility for anything that could go wrong when you jailbreak.

It was a very eventful weekend with respect to jailbreaking. Instead of the much-anticipated Greenpois0n jailbreak being released on 10/10/10 at 10:10 a.m., geohot re-entered the jailbreak scene and preempted Greenpois0n by releasing Limera1n a day earlier on 10/9/10 and incorporated an untethered jailbreak (thanks to comex) for 4.0-4.1. Unlike Greenpois0n, the Limera1n jailbreak applies to iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, and iPod touch 4G.

Currently the version released by geohot is a Windows download, but he promises that a Mac version is on its way. Apparently the exploit used for Limera1n is different than the one used for Greenpois0n by the Chronic Dev Team. Doing my best to explain something I know very little about, geohot released Limera1n, a jailbreak which utilizes a different exploit than Greenpois0n. Rather than reveal two exploits back-to-back so Apple can patch both of them, the Chronic Dev Team plans instead to incorporate Limera1n into Greenpois0n so as to preserve the SHAtter exploit for a future jailbreak (assuming Apple is able to patch the exploit used by Limera1n).

My two cents — Chronic Dev Team may not release Greenpois0n at all, but if they do, they will use geohot’s exploit from Limera1n and keep their SHAtter exploit as an ace in the hole. Anyway, if you choose to jailbreak with Limera1n, just head over to www.limera1n.com, download it (Windows only for now), and follow the directions closely. Please be aware that jailbreaking is a risky proposition and there are no guarantees that it will work — in fact, you could brick your iPhone, iPad, or other iDevice. Please know that nakedipad.com does NOT take any responsibility or liability for YOUR efforts to jailbreak your device — be warned!

Just yesterday the Chronic Dev Team and @p0sixninja announced that their new Jailbreak, Greenpois0n, will be available for mass consumption on 10/10/10 at 10:10:10 AM GMT (Sunday). If you follow Chronic Dev Team on Twitter you will learn a few more details about Greenpois0n. For instance, thanks to @comex, Greenpois0n will be an untethered jailbreak. This means that if you need to restore or reset your iPad, iPhone or other jailbroken iDevice, you won’t have to re-jailbreak it each time.

We also learn that this new jailbreak will apply to the iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 4, and even the new AppleTV. Keep in mind, too, that this jailbreak utilizes an exploit that is not easily remedied by Apple. Thus, the cat-and-mouse game played between Apple and the jailbreaking community will be one-sided in favor of the jailbreakers for a while — at least until Apple introduces a new iPad or iPhone 5.

Let us know if Greenpois0n is the jailbreak you’ve been waiting for and if you plan on jailbreaking.

The Chronic Dev Team and, more specifically, team member Joshua Hill (@p0sixninja) has just barely posted some great news for current jailbreakers and those waiting to jailbreak their iPhone 4 devices and iPad tablets — the Greenpois0n 4.1 Jailbreak is ready to roll and will be available this Sunday — 10/10/10 at 10:10:10AM GMT — memorable date, memorable time, and certainly a most memorable jailbreak in that THIS jailbreak will require new hardware from Apple (i.e., chipset) to patch the exploit.

iPhone users stuck on 4.0.2 and 4.1 will finally be able to jailbreak, and those like me who have avoided the latest firmware update from Apple in order to preserve their present jailbreak can now rejoice that they can benefit from the firmware update (proximity sensor, anyone??) AND enjoy the benefits of jailbreaking. Stay tuned on 10/10/10 because as soon as there is a link, we will direct the way. Keep in mind, though, that this jailbreak is hotly anticipated server traffic is certain to be very, very busy, so be patient on Sunday.

Thanks, Chronic Dev  Team, for your hard work!

In virtually no time at all following the release of AppleTV, jailbreakers @p0sixninja and @MuscleNerd have jailbroken it with SHAtter and have posted up some proof on Twitter. You can catch the full video here of the jailbroken AppleTV (2010) in action. This is great news for those of us patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for the SHAtter jailbreak to come to the iPhone, iPod touch and, of course, the iPad.

After all, Jailbreaking really is a matter of taking the red pill and seeing how far the rabbit hole goes — jailbreaking opens the closed system of your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and allows the installation of outside apps onto your device — apps that are not available and not permitted in Apple’s App Store and provide for a far greater customizable experience with your device. So, seeing a new jailbroken iOS-powered AppleTV is an encouraging sight and we hope that the SHAtter jailbreak will be available for all of our other “i” devices very soon!

Thanks, @p0sixninja and @MuscleNerd!

The folks over at the Dev-Team Blog have posted a video (above) that demonstrates the SHAtter exploit (thanks to @pod2g and @p0sixninja of the Chronic Dev Team) working on an iPod touch 4G. Although a beta version, this exploit will ultimately work on the new iPhone 4 and should also work on any other device running iOS 4, including the iPad.

Patience is the key here — it may still be a little while before this new jailbreak is available for consumption by the masses, but it will be worth the wait in that Apple will likely not be able to patch it without a hardware upgrade. Simply put, additional firmware updates from Apple via iTunes will not negate your SHAtter jailbreak. Stay tuned for more jailbreaking updates as this story unfolds.

If you have heard of “jailbreaking” and are waiting for the much-anticipated “Greenpois0n” jailbreak from the Chronic Dev Team, please keep waiting until the official release. Once it’s official and legit, we will let you know here and provide a link where you can safely download the appropriate jailbreak software. Anyone else claiming to have the latest and greatest jailbreak for iOS 4.x will likely be offering something that is malicious that could do anything from bricking your device to stealing your passwords.

If you don’t know much about jailbreaking, be sure to research online and only proceed with jailbreaking once you have a legitimate jailbreak download and the knowledge to apply the jailbreak to your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch safely. In the meantime, be patient — the jailbreaking community is working on an exploit that promises a solid jailbreak that will likely require Apple to upgrade their hardware in order to patch it.

I could certainly benefit from a new jailbreak so I can update my iPhone 4 with iOS 4.1 — heaven knows I’ve done plenty of cheek-button-pressing during phone calls due to proximity sensor issues — but the other benefits derived from being jailbroken have caused me to wait for a jailbreak for the newly-released iOS 4.1 firmware update from Apple. The good news is that not only is a jailbreak for iOS 4.1 coming in the near future, but the jailbreak is based off of a bootrom exploit that will require an entirely new processor revision from Apple. In other words, the latest exploit that a new jailbreak would be based off of should be impervious to any additional Apple firmware updates. Outstanding!

This news should make jailbreakers and jailbreaking wannabes rejoice in the streets. I, for one, am very excited about this latest breakthrough by the generous members of the jailbreaking community and look forward to having the new jailbreak so I can update my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.1 AND jailbreak my iPhone — yes, I want to have my cake and eat it, too.

More good news — the new exploit and subsequent jailbreak should apply to the iPad as well, so if you want to keep your iPad jailbreak groove going, it’s just a matter of time before the new jailbreak should be available. Good work, iPhone Dev-Team and jailbreaking extraordinaires. Thanks for your effort and time!
