Promoting a movie or other event with an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad app is nothing new, but it seems like downloading one of these apps and enjoying some serious functionality, usefulness and longevity is a rare thing. I learned of the Super 8 app while it was being offered free, but I can assure you that the paltry $.99 for this app is worth every penny and then some. Also, it IS one of those aforementioned rare apps — it’s very functional, useful and long-lasting for your iOS device!

Maybe you are old enough to remember making and watching old super 8 movies or maybe you aren’t — either way, this app is fantastic and a lot of fun to use on your iPhone or new camera-equipped iPod touch. From the nostalgic look of an old super 8 camera to developing your film and pulling the screen down to watch your movie creation complete with the clickity-click sound of the “projector”, this app is great fun. Give it a try and check out the different filter and lens effects. There’s nothing like taking a little trip down memory lane by being able to make your own super 8 movies on your iPhone or iPod touch with Super 8!

Good news for print subscribers of Sports Illustrated, Time, and Fortune magazines. Time, Inc., the owner of all three magazines, has reached a deal with Apple to provide free subscription iPad versions of their magazines for customers who already have a print subscription. Since Apple has traditionally taken a 30 percent cut of any app purchase, including in-app subscription purchases from publishers, there must be some behind-the-scenes deal-making that gives Apple a piece of the pie, even if it’s a smaller piece than their 30 percent take.

Oddly enough, these magazine issues for the iPad are available for purchase one issue at a time, but if you want the subscription for your iPad, you must purchase the print subscription — maybe that’s part of the deal that Time and Apple worked out. Are iPad subscriptions enough to entice you to subscribe to the print versions of these magazine? What iPad magazine apps do you currently use and why?

As we all know, it is not a pleasant thing to visit the hospital, whether it be as a patient, or as a visitor. Typically, either way, you’re waiting in line for this, or that. During that time of waiting, one can ‘read’, ‘walk around’, or just simply ‘be bored’. Or…

I was in hospital for just over 24 hours, and had an inkling that I would be there much longer.  With that in mind, when the wife and I were leaving home, we made sure to pack the iPad 2, 3G 16GB, and a charger. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still had my iPhone 4 with me. But, you just never know when you’d need that extra screen space to navigate websites, watch movies, play games, etc. Keep reading for my personal experience with my iPad 2 at the hospital!

Two new titles from Electronic Arts (EA) have hit the App Store, and both are designed for the iPad: SimCity Deluxe ($6.99) and RISK ($6.99). This is exciting news because I’m a big fan of both games and I believed that the iPad was well-suited for both of these titles.

I remember playing SimCity for the first time back in the early 90′s on a desktop PC and now the game is available on the iPad with multi-touch controls and excellent HD graphics. In SimCity Deluxe, YOU are the Mayor and City Planner of your very own city — build, destroy, zone for different properties, handle disasters, and much more. I enjoyed playing the RISK board game growing up and have played various clones on a desktop or laptop computer, but having played a game already on the iPad, this new iPad version is fun and challenging. If complete world domination gets your groove on, then try RISK for yourself. If you pick up these titles for your iPad, let us know what you think!

Since Infinity Blade (App Store for $5.99) launched just five days ago, it’s hauled in an estimated $1.6M and counting, according to GameIndustry and AppModo when analyzing Game Center data. According to the data, over 274,000 members had registered the game, and likely many more have bought the app without registering with Game Center.

Whenever I get a few minutes of “down” time (a real rarity these days), I do a little hack-and-slash on Infinity Blade. If you need a little touchscreen slicing and dicing practice, I can’t help but think of Fruit Ninja being a good, harmless warm-up for the more serious and life-or-death struggle found in Infinity Blade. Yes, that last thought was very random, but while playing the game, I’m oft reminded that I’ve used the same swipes to slaughter helpless watermelons, kiwi fruit, bananas and the like. Infinity Blade truly offers more depth and stunning graphics, however. If you haven’t picked it up already, then you should consider it if you like the genre.

The first mobile game powered by Epic’s cutting-edge Unreal Engine 3 technology, Infinity Blade ($5.99), is now available in the App Store for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. The graphics in this game are amazing — I have been able to spend a few minutes playing and I can already proclaim that this title is well worth the meager price of $5.99.

In the game, you have the chance to develop your character as you fight your way through a visually-stunning 3D environment. You control your character with tap-to-move controls to explore the castle realm and search for collectible items like treasure, swords, shields, armor, and other magical items to enhance your character and better prepare you for each battle that proves to be more and more difficult as you progress. During combat, you tap and swipe on your screen to attack, dodge, block, and cast spells — definitely a game that requires skill as well as luck.

I’m looking forward to delving into this game further when I have more time. As I said, the graphics are stunning and look absolutely amazing on my iPhone 4′s retina display. It’s an excellent effort from ChAIR Entertainment and they promise to bring more in the future, like new areas to conquer, multiplayer (!), and new equipment and enemies for your character. If you pick up Infinity Blade for your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, let us know what you think of the game!
