According to an Apple press release today, Apple’s App Store has now over 500,000 apps and customers have downloaded over 18 billion (yep, billion with a “B”) apps to their iOS-powered iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches. Apps are currently being downloaded at a rate of 1 billion per month.

Having been a smartphone user for many years now, it’s simply incredible to me to see how Apple has revolutionized the mobile app market. The sheer numbers of apps available and the number being downloaded is mind-boggling. Clearly, if you are submitting a new app to the App Store, it will be a tremendous challenge to get noticed. Even if you have an app of the likes that no one has seen before, it will take some marketing savvy above and beyond the basic submission to the App Store to get your app noticed by the teeming iOS-using masses out there.

Are there any app developers out there with a thought or two about the current state of app development and marketing?

Two new titles from Electronic Arts (EA) have hit the App Store, and both are designed for the iPad: SimCity Deluxe ($6.99) and RISK ($6.99). This is exciting news because I’m a big fan of both games and I believed that the iPad was well-suited for both of these titles.

I remember playing SimCity for the first time back in the early 90′s on a desktop PC and now the game is available on the iPad with multi-touch controls and excellent HD graphics. In SimCity Deluxe, YOU are the Mayor and City Planner of your very own city — build, destroy, zone for different properties, handle disasters, and much more. I enjoyed playing the RISK board game growing up and have played various clones on a desktop or laptop computer, but having played a game already on the iPad, this new iPad version is fun and challenging. If complete world domination gets your groove on, then try RISK for yourself. If you pick up these titles for your iPad, let us know what you think!

Just how capable is Apple’s iOS as a gaming platform? On Dec. 9, Chair Entertainment will release to the App Store the much-anticipated Infinity Blade. This action RPG game is powered by the Unreal Engine and will be a universal app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and will be priced at $5.99. I’m looking forward to what this game will look like on the retina display of my iPhone 4, but I’m also interested in playing it on the more spacious screen of my iPad. Let us know in Comments if you plan on picking up this game on Dec. 9!

It’s been an eventful past few days and I decided to post about some travel time with my iPad. What a weekend! I got married yesterday, and now I’m posting this from 37,000 feet via iPad and the services of GoGo Inflight, on my way to Las Vegas!

For the holiday season, Google Chrome has partnered with GoGo Inflight to offer their brilliant service for FREE! Albeit I have an account, during this time it still seems to be using a free option instead of my paid account.

Suffice to say, GoGo Inflight is rather fast and seems fairly reliable, too. I’ve had no disconnects or even a dip in service. I’m using Safari, Facebook, Twitter, email and even Words With Friends.

The flight, a Boeing 767, is almost full. But, what I want to know is if, say, 80% of passengers were using GoGo Inflight, would the service degrade?

Anyway, from 37,000 feet, with 3 hours 14 minutes to go, deuces…

[Editor's note: a big THANK YOU to Ivan for this on-location post and a HUGE Congratulations on your marriage! Well done!]

CBS announces today that the iPad app for their highly-acclaimed, highly-successful news program, 60 Minutes, is now available in the App Store for $4.99. The 60 Minutes iPad app features interviews, investigative reports, profiles of people in the news, feature segments, and video content, all viewable on the gorgeous display of your iPad. Here are the features you can expect for your $4.99 app purchase:

• This Week on 60 Minutes – all the high-quality video segments and stories from each week’s broadcast
• Previews of each week’s show leading up to the broadcast
• 60 Minutes Overtime – originally produced content offering a weekly behind-the-scenes look at the production of 60 Minutes as well as timely archival segments
• Search the extensive 60 Minutes video archive, including stories from past and current seasons
• Browse video segments by category and correspondent
• Easily share your favorite segments and share via email, Facebook, or Twitter

So far customers are giving it lots of stars in the App Store Customer Ratings section, so perhaps CBS has a winner here that’s comparable to their long-lived news program. If you decide to take the plunge and buy it, let us know what you think in the comments!

It’s been a hard day’s night and I’ve been working like a dog. Well, sleeping, actually. But I got up in time to make sure our readers are aware of a significant Apple iTunes event — for the first time ever, you can download any one of the 13 Beatles studio albums or grab the entire box set on iTunes. So whether you want to download to listen on your computer, your iPad, iPhone, iPod, iPod touch, or any other iDevice you have, take a step or two back in time when the mop-top was fresh and psychedelia was bold and new and start downloading The Beatles classic music. No matter your musical tastes, no one did it like John, Paul, Ringo and George.

In case you missed Apple’s Fall Event today, here’s a quick recap of what Apple is bringing to the media-hungry consumer market:

  • iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod touch coming next week (including bug fixes, HD YouTube uploads, TV rentals and Game Center), and iOS 4.2 for iPad coming in November with goodies like wireless printing (yay!) and AirPlay (replaces airtunes and adds pictures and streaming video).
  • A new multi-touch iPod nano available in different colors for $149 (8GB) and $179 (16GB).
  • Revamped iPod touch that’s thinner and sports a Retina display like the iPhone 4, HD video recording, FaceTime video calling, 3-axis gyro, and iOS 4.1 with Game Center.
  • New iTunes 10 with a better UI, new icon, and Ping social networking.
  • New Apple TV that’s a lot smaller, incorporates Netflix, $4.99 HD Hollywood movies, TV shows from ABC and FOX for 99-cents, and a $99 price tag for the whole kit and kaboodle.

What do you think about Apple’s new product announcements today? What about having to wait until November for iOS 4.2 for iPad?? And with the new iOS 4.1 coming next week, will you be tempted to lose your jailbreak if your iPhone 4 is jailbroken?

The sure signs of approaching Fall — football, the leaves start changing, there’s a crispness in the air, and… Apple holds a “special event” in San Francisco. By the way, we are loving the sweet Apple-fied acoustic guitar. It must be how Steve-o croons to the ladies when he serenades.

On a more serious note (no pun intended), it’s likely this event will concern the new Apple TV (iTV?) and maybe some new iPods. Also, this is right around the time that we can expect iOS 4 for the iPad (folders, anyone?) and maybe — pure rumor, conjecture and speculation here — a whiff of the 7″ iPad?

What do you think Apple’s “special event” will bring?
