Wouldn’t it be nifty if you could tether other devices you have with your iPad 3G so you could enjoy internet connectivity with those devices as well? According to new menu options in “Settings” on the recent iPad iOS 4.2 beta 2, Apple may be offering this very soon on the iPad. What you are seeing above is a screenshot of an iPad running on 3′s network in Europe, but it clearly displays an “Internet Tethering” section with fields for APN, Username and Password — so it appears that tethering is going to be available soon for the iPad.

If and when tethering becomes available through a firmware update on the iPad, is it something you will use? If so, how?

Vivitar, well known for their manufacturing of photographic equipment and accessories over the last 70+ years, is now looking to make a name for themselves for iPad owners by unveiling a new line of Apple iPad accessories. Their products will include a variety of protective cases, screen protectors, and chargers. It’s great to see a major company diversify and recognize the success of the iPad and hopefully we will get our hands on some of their products so we can tell you more about them.

In the meantime, if you want to check out Vivitar’s products and pick them up for your iPad, you can go to retailers like Office Depot, Kmart and Sears. Hopefully Vivitar will soon include product information at their site, www.vivitar.com. Let us know if you get a chance to swing by one of the afore-mentioned retailers to check out Vivitar accessories for your iPad.

How would you like to be able to watch movies or your favorite television programs on your iPad, just like you could on the new AppleTV? Given some interesting firmware findings on the latest iOS-based AppleTV (Lowtide.app), iPad users may soon be able to enjoy the AppleTV and AirPlay experience (and streaming video via the Cloud in general) on their iPads. In fact, you may be able to start a movie or tv show on your AppleTV and then finish it on your iPad 3G in the event you have to leave for work or run an errand.

Using the AppleTV interface may also allow you to stream content directly from the iTunes Store, adding additional entertainment flexibility to your iPad without using up precious storage space that can disappear quickly when you download video content. Given the opportunity, do you foresee streaming movies or television shows to your iPad?

For the past couple weeks I’ve had the chance to use the Panasonic Bluetooth-powered Link-To-Cell KX-TG6582 digital cordless handset, connected via Bluetooth to my iPhone 4, available for $99.95 right here. It allows you to use your cellular line of service through a traditional cordless phone setup, which can be very convenient when using your phone around the house or small office and don’t want to carry your cell phone everywhere. Without getting too technical and focusing on my actual user experience, please read on after the break for my review of this gadget! Continue reading »

The folks over at the Dev-Team Blog have posted a video (above) that demonstrates the SHAtter exploit (thanks to @pod2g and @p0sixninja of the Chronic Dev Team) working on an iPod touch 4G. Although a beta version, this exploit will ultimately work on the new iPhone 4 and should also work on any other device running iOS 4, including the iPad.

Patience is the key here — it may still be a little while before this new jailbreak is available for consumption by the masses, but it will be worth the wait in that Apple will likely not be able to patch it without a hardware upgrade. Simply put, additional firmware updates from Apple via iTunes will not negate your SHAtter jailbreak. Stay tuned for more jailbreaking updates as this story unfolds.

Thanks to Shanzai.com and their “ears to the ground” in Shenzhen, and the Shenzhen – Foxconn connection, the rumor mill is churning away with the latest 7-inch iPad rumor. According to Shanzai, a 7-inch iPad is already a finished product and more resembles a larger iPhone 4 rather than an iPad. In other words, it’s looking less like a small iPad and may be toted as a larger iPod touch. Interesting.

The new 7-inch (iPod touch? iPad?) tablet will also allegedly be equipped with both a camera on the back and a front-facing camera for FaceTime. Also, there are rumored to be roughly 5 different designs floating around in order to throw competitors off the scent and, of course, it will be helpful to Apple if engineers don’t leave the 7-inch tablet alone on a barstool prior to release.

Does a 7-inch iPod touch/iPad tablet interest you?

If you haven’t checked your “updates” section of the App Store on your iPad yet, get over there and download the major updates for the iWork apps — Pages, Numbers and Keynote. There is a whole host of changes and improvements, but most notably are the ability to export in Office file formats — .doc for Pages, .xls for Numbers, and .ppt for Keynote — all extremely important if you want to be using your iPad more and more as a laptop replacement in the business world. Also, support for MobileMe iDisk is added so you can export Office-friendly documents to anyone using MS Office — just copy your docs to iDisk (for MobileMe account users) and share.

Check out the lists of changes after the break!

If you have heard of “jailbreaking” and are waiting for the much-anticipated “Greenpois0n” jailbreak from the Chronic Dev Team, please keep waiting until the official release. Once it’s official and legit, we will let you know here and provide a link where you can safely download the appropriate jailbreak software. Anyone else claiming to have the latest and greatest jailbreak for iOS 4.x will likely be offering something that is malicious that could do anything from bricking your device to stealing your passwords.

If you don’t know much about jailbreaking, be sure to research online and only proceed with jailbreaking once you have a legitimate jailbreak download and the knowledge to apply the jailbreak to your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch safely. In the meantime, be patient — the jailbreaking community is working on an exploit that promises a solid jailbreak that will likely require Apple to upgrade their hardware in order to patch it.

The iPad has a little ways to go if you want to use it as a laptop replacement, and certainly the idea of the iPad taking over the duties of your laptop is a topic that could be debated at length. Taking one step closer to laptop replacement, Apple will soon offer AirPrint on iOS 4.2 and both the iPad and iPhone will be capable of sending print jobs to most printers.

Using iOS 4.2 beta, Mac OS X 10.6.5 (also beta), and an iPad, Oliver over at the-iBlog has put together a video demonstrating AirPrint and it’s a nice preview until the real deal is released (iOS 4.2, that is) for the iPad in November. So, without further ado, give it a watch and let us know what you think. Is this another big step in the direction of the iPad replacing the laptop, or at least a heavy jab at the netbook market?
